What is 11SMn30 steel?

11SMn30 (Werkstoff No. 1.0715, equivalent to AISI 1213) is a free-cutting (free-machining) steel with high sulphur (0.27–0.33%) and manganese. Sulphur forms manganese-sulphide inclusions that break the chip, giving high cutting speed, long tool life and excellent surface finish. It is the standard material for small parts mass-produced on automatic lathes and CNC. It is selected for machinability, not mechanical strength.

11SMn30 / 1.0715 properties and use

11SMn30 is the base grade of free-cutting steels. Its deliberately raised sulphur forms MnS inclusions in the steel; these make the chip short and brittle during machining — enabling high-speed turning for mass production without clogging. This steel is not hardened by heat treatment and is not used for high strength; sulphur lowers toughness and weldability. It is usually supplied cold drawn (+C) as tight-tolerance bright bar. For even higher machinability, the leaded variant 11SMnPb30 (1.0718) is used. Aktif Çelik supplies 11SMn30 as cold drawn bright bar in tight tolerance, with EN 10204 3.1 certification.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is free-cutting (free-machining) steel?+

A steel with deliberately raised sulphur (and sometimes lead) that machines very easily. Sulphur forms MnS inclusions that break the chip, giving high cutting speed, low tool wear and a clean surface. It is ideal for mass-producing parts on automatic lathes and CNC.

Can 11SMn30 be hardened?+

No. Its low carbon (≤0.14%) means it does not harden on quenching and is not used for high strength. If a hardenable surface is needed, choose a case-hardening steel (16MnCr5); if strength is needed, choose a Q&T steel (C45, 42CrMo4).

What is the difference between 11SMn30 and 11SMnPb30?+

11SMnPb30 (1.0718) is 11SMn30 with added lead (Pb). Lead further improves machinability (higher speed, better finish). For environmental/health reasons, lead-free 11SMn30 or bismuth alternatives are increasingly preferred.
