What is the steel weight calculation formula?
The steel weight formula varies by profile type. Round bar: d² x 0.006165 x L (kg), Pipe: (D-t) x t x 0.02466 x L (kg), Plate: a x b x t x 0.00000785 (kg). All formulas are derived from carbon steel density (7.85 g/cm³).
How is pipe weight calculated?
Pipe weight formula: (Outer Diameter - Wall Thickness) x Wall Thickness x 0.02466 x Length. All dimensions in mm, length in meters. Result is in kg.
Is stainless steel heavier than carbon steel?
Yes, stainless steel is slightly heavier. Carbon steel: 7.85 g/cm³, AISI 304: 7.93 g/cm³, AISI 316: 7.98 g/cm³. Selecting the correct density value is important.
How is steel plate weight calculated?
Steel plate weight: Width(mm) x Length(mm) x Thickness(mm) x 0.00000785. Example: 1000x2000x10mm plate: 1000 x 2000 x 10 x 0.00000785 = 157 kg.
How accurate is this calculator?
Our calculator provides theoretical weight values. Actual weight may vary by 3-5% depending on manufacturing tolerances and surface conditions. Weighing is recommended for exact values.
How to calculate the weight of a steel part?
The total weight of a steel part = volume × density (7,850 kg/m³); for profiles the practical way is to multiply the unit weight (kg/m) by the length. Round bar: 0.00617 × D² × L (kg); pipe: (D − t) × t × 0.02466 × L; sheet/plate: width × length × thickness × 0.00785. D = diameter, t = wall thickness (mm), L = length (m). For total order weight, multiply the part weight by the quantity.
Weight and order calculation by profile type
Weight calculation is needed for shipping, cost and handling planning. The logic is always the same: find the volume, multiply by steel density (7,850 kg/m³). For profiles, instead of computing volume each time, use the shortcut unit weight (kg/m) × length. Practical formulas (dimensions mm, length m, result kg): • Round: 0.00617 × D² × L • Square: 0.00785 × a² × L • Flat: 0.00785 × width × thickness × L • Pipe: 0.02466 × t × (D − t) × L • Sheet/plate: width × length × thickness × 0.00785 (m² × mm) Order total = part weight × quantity. Material density affects the result directly: stainless steel (304: 7.93 · 316: 7.98 g/cm³) is slightly heavier than carbon steel (7.85); for precise work use the density of the specific grade.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the steel weight calculation formula?+
Total weight = volume × density (7,850 kg/m³). Practical forms: round 0.00617 × D² × L, pipe (D − t) × t × 0.02466 × L, sheet width × length × thickness × 0.00785 (D, t in mm; L in m; result kg).
How is pipe weight calculated?+
Pipe weight = (Outside diameter − Wall thickness) × Wall thickness × 0.02466 × Length. Dimensions in mm, length in m, result kg. The formula is for carbon steel (7.85 g/cm³).
How is sheet/plate weight found?+
Sheet weight = width(m) × length(m) × thickness(mm) × 7.85 kg. For example a 1×2 m, 10 mm plate: 1 × 2 × 10 × 7.85 = 157 kg.
Is stainless steel weight different from carbon steel?+
Yes, slightly heavier. Carbon steel is 7.85 g/cm³, AISI 304 is 7.93, and AISI 316 is 7.98 g/cm³. For an accurate calculation, use the density of the specific material.
How is hexagonal steel unit weight calculated?+
Hexagon (across flats S) formula: 0.00680 × S² (mm) = kg/m. E.g. S=30 mm: 0.00680 × 900 = 6.12 kg/m.
